He is currently working as a <strong>research professor and deputy director<\/strong> of the <strong>Institute of Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies<\/strong> (IDAEA) in <strong>Barcelon<\/strong>a which is run by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). He was appointed <strong>Director of the Catalan institute for water research (ICRA) in Girona<\/strong> in 2008. During 2010 and 2011. he was the <strong>visiting professor at the King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His research career has been focused on the <strong>area of water quality<\/strong>, particularly in the <strong>development of methods for controlling organic pollution by the so-called \u201cemerging pollutants\u201d<\/strong> (polar pesticides, surfactants \u2013detergents\u2013, endocrine disruptors and pharmaceutical products) in <strong>waste and natural water.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since 2010 he is listed among the most internationally cited scientists (<strong>ISI Highly Cited<\/strong>), by the number and the exceptional quality of his publications. According to Scopus he has the <strong>Hirsch-Index of 104<\/strong> and total number of <strong>citations over 50 thousand<\/strong>. According to Google Scholar, his <strong>H-index is 132<\/strong> and the total number of <strong>citations is almost 80 thousand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since 1990s he has been editor of various journals<\/strong> (TRAC, Talanta, ABC, Environment International) and <strong>book series<\/strong> (Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry and The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry). <strong>Since 2012<\/strong> he is the <strong>Co-Editor-in-chief of the Science of the Total Environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, he received the <strong>King James I Prize for Environmental Protection<\/strong> (Spain), in 2012 the <strong>Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water<\/strong> of Saudi Arabia, and in 2012 the <strong>Recipharm International Environmental Prize<\/strong>, a Swedish company leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in Europe<\/p>\n<p>In 2011 he was appointed as <strong>Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Board (STB)<\/strong> in the frame of the European Union-Joint Programming Initiative on &#8220;<strong>Water Challenges for a Changing World<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 he was awarded <strong>Doctor Honoris Causa<\/strong> by the University of Ioannina (Greece).<\/p>\n<p>As of March 2018, he has been <strong>supervisor of 53 PhDs<\/strong>, short and continuous education courses in Universities from Spain, South Korea, Brazil, Greece, Saudi Arabia among others as well as at PITTCON , SETAC and ExTech international conferences.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;14790&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_separator][vc_single_image image=&#8221;14801&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1521663316232{padding-right: 50px !important;padding-left: 50px !important;}&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]Born in Men\u00e0rguens (Lleida) in 1954, he obtained a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1977 and a Ph.D. in Analytic Chemistry from the same university in 1984.
